Sonnet

And at night gulls call across the bay,
And cold waves wash her away from me,
And with her, all my love cast drifting. Free
To sail the cliffs and beat across grey
Water, haggle with the seagulls when they
Gather in the moonlight. And a dark sea
Sighs against the rocks, and the wind breathes trees
To life and whispers dreams. And when the day
Breaks apart the dream, I find her puddled
Warm beside me in the sheets. How can I
Tell her I was with the moon as it cradled
Squabbling seabirds? That I huddled,
Scared, beneath a cliff for comfort, all my
Thoughts of her adrift in a wordless cry?
