- The poems are triggered by your phone’s GPS, so you need to have location services enabled. iPhone: Settings>Privacy & Security>Location Services> on. Android: Settings> Biometrics and security>Location> on
- you also need to make sure the app can use your camera, otherwise when you press the SCAN button from within the app, nothing will happen. To enable these functions: iPhone: Settings>SatsymphQR> set ‘Location’ to ‘While using’; switch camera and Mobile Data on (button shows green) Android: Settings>Apps>SatsymphQR>Permissions> make sure your camera and location are enabled (button is green)
- Also, in ‘app permissions’ it helps to TURN OFF NOTIFICATIONS, otherwise various bells and whistles will sound at intervals
- Um, sometimes people hear nothing because your phone’s sound is turned off … just saying. So make sure you turn it on!
- Remember – GETTING THE WALKS ON YOUR PHONE IS ALWAYS A 2-STAGE PROCESS. (1) You need to have Satsymph QR on your phone. (2) Then you need to add the walk you want to go on to ‘Library’ by pointing the SCAN function WITHIN THE APP ITSELF at the relevant QR, whether this QR is on your pc/laptop screen, or on the paper pdf you have printed out (or on any promotional literature).
- the experience is downloaded to your phone and uses your phone’s GPS. Interestingly enough, each person’s phone reacts slightly differently, and – did you know this? – your phone when in ‘location’ mode is continually asking ‘Is Ralph here or is he … there?‘ It’s jumping around all the time, it’s never ‘oh, THIS is IT!’ So things, locations of the soundpools etc etc can vary, hour to hour, minute to minute, day to day. It’s a characteristic of the technology – go with it!
- no, we do not track you through the app. The only information we gather is the number of times Satsymph QR has been downloaded
- sound quality is obviously better with headphones/earbuds. These also allow you to hear the ‘spatiality’ which is a feature of some of the audio (what you hear depends on which way you’re facing).
- An interesting suggestion a tester made recently was that, if you’re a party of people, one person (maybe a child) could be designated ‘official soundpool sniffer‘ – they go find the soundpool with one phone and the rest crowd around to hear the poem. Sounds like a lot of fun!
- Tip: print out the maps and instructions pdf from your home PC (best as A5) and take it with you. Say, then, you meet your friend at Dead Woman’s Ditch and they haven’t done any of that download malarky. They can, then, if they have network access, follow the same process you followed. Bingo, they’ve got the walk on their phone – from the top of the Quantocks! The Romantic Poets would approve!
- If you are not on location at the start of any of the walks you will get the START screen only (eg below). If you then press OK, then BEGIN, you will get a blank screen and The Big Blue (locational) Arrow only. Nothing will play and you will see no map until you are ON LOCATION at START:

(12) this is what you will see on your screen: the soundpools are pulsating coloured blobs on a map and I am The Big Blue Arrow. The numbers are how far I am from a soundpool (in meters). Go into the soundpools and twizz around a bit – the sound will swivel around your head. Play with it! (ps the map is not scrollable – the Big Blue Arrow is ME. it points in the direction I am facing)!
PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN ON THE WALKS and don’t get lost in the soundworld – stay well away from cliff edges if you’re on the coast and watch out for other people, dogs, any obstacles etc! All the soundpools are layered over public rights of way or publicly accessible areas – please do not go ‘off-piste’, there’s nothing there! Do wear appropriate clothing and footwear – this is a series of walks in the open air, high up on hills or down in deep, muddy combes with no shelter, and the weather can change rapidly! The maps on the app are schematic – you are advised to take a proper map – like an OS map – with you, especially for the longer and more complicated walks. The app is used at your own responsibility!
